ABOUT SIDLE HOUSE
Maddy Vertenten started Sidle House in her 100-year-old barn, a.k.a. ‘Big Beauty’ in Freeport, Maine during the summer of 2023. The original spark of this idea came while visiting New Mexico and its indigenous craft markets, art galleries, and Georgia O'Keeffe's Abiquiu home in the early 2000's.
About Maddy
“I’ve always been a creative person. In college I majored in violin performance and played professionally before studying business in grad school. I worked in corporate HR, executive coaching, small business, and non-profit spaces while raising a family. I have always enjoyed art and artists in all mediums - but my appreciation for contemporary art grew significantly in the years since encountering O’Keeffe’s presence in her Abiquiu home.
I hope to bring a more appreciative audience to contemporary art. I feel strongly that we must support artists in their making and their livelihood. Our collective humanity depends upon people who dare to create art, share insights, and promote empathy.
I believe Art is for everybody. I want exhibition spaces to feel inclusive and welcoming. As a younger person I used to believe I couldn’t enter a gallery without particular intellectual or financial capacity. It’s taken me time and wisdom to realize that if I enjoy experiencing art, I’m allowed in the space! I don’t have to be able to articulate why I’m moved by a piece, or be able to afford it. I can stand there and simply connect. I can enjoy the simple act of appreciation. Anyone can, and I hope more people will.”
