HANNAH BERTA
MAINE
Hanna Berta is a multimedia artist from Midcoast Maine who primarily works with hand-cut paper and paint. Her work is rooted in observations of the natural world and often possesses simple lines made complex with dreamy detail and subtle edge. Her work entails a great deal of process; she documents her surroundings using photography and through layers of drawing in pink or blue graphite transforms thick sheets of printmaking paper into painting studies and hand-cut paper sketches. In turn she layers these studies into space using pins as a naturalist might, preserving a moment in time.
Hannah became fascinated by cut paper during her studies at the University of Maine and her love for cut-paper grew through multiple independent studies on the topic. Later, while cleaning out her grandparent’s house, Hannah found a stack of cut-paper her grandad had collected and stashed away as if just for her to find, and she knew she was on her path. Hannah has been exploring the vast applications of the medium ever since.
As for the content of her work, Hannah believes that the answers to most things can be found by zooming in and out of focus on the natural world and the patterns held within. Her work has evolved from a simple search of truth to a pursuit of experiencing, feeling, exploring the world.
